LONDON (AFP) - Watching and possessing images of rape and sexual torture is to be made a criminal offence, punishable with a jail term of up to three years. The plan follows a campaign by two MPs and the mother of a schoolteacher who was killed in 2003. Violent Internet pornography was implicated in the trial of the man convicted of her murder. Home Office minister Vernon Coaker said there was an urgent need to tackle the problem because such images were becoming more easily available on the Internet and control of their distribution more difficult. The new laws - which will cover pornography online and offline - will ban possession of images depicting "scenes of extreme sexual violence", plus other obscene material like beastiality or necrophilia. For example, it would cover violence that is, or appears to be, life-threatening or is likely to result in "serious and disabling injury". Britain's Obscene Publications Act 1959 currently bans the publication and distribution of such material, but not its possession.
Under the proposals, the maximum penalty for publication, distribution and possession for gain of obscene pornography would also be increased from three to five years' imprisonment. The Home Office said they did not intend to target people who accidentally access obscene pornography nor those working within the mainstream adult entertainment industry, which works within existing obscenity laws. The project is in response to a consultation launched last year and comes after a 50,000-signature petition against extreme Internet sites promoting violence against women for sexual gratification was presented to parliament.

So, does this mean anyone in deliberate possession of the bible in UK - depicting, among others - a violent, necrophiliac, and homoerotic scene involving whipping, crown of thorns, and crucifixion will be arrested and sentenced to 3 years?

All the scenes are staged, and no one is forcing anyone to watch them, or (for that matter) to participate in them. I, personally, rather find daytime TV and reality shows far more intellectually pornographic, perverted, shallow, and degrading. This is unbelievable, I just wish people would realize the long-term effects of these kinds of draconian regulations against people's privacy and general freedoms. If this will happen in Canada - I hope people stand up firmly against that.

Costly Mistake

The leader of the militant group Hezbollah says that if he could do it all over again, he wouldn't order the capture of Israeli soldiers that ignited the war in Lebanon.

"You ask me, if I had known on July 11 … that the operation would lead to such a war, would I do it? I say no, absolutely not," Sheik Hassan Nasrallah said in an interview with Lebanon's New TV station broadcast Sunday.
"He more or less admitted that he miscalculated," CBC Radio's Mike Hornbrook reported.
The war devastated Lebanon, where at least 850 militants and civilians died in Israeli bombardments and land attacks, while Hezbollah rockets and fighters killed at least 157 Israeli civilians and soldiers. Estimates of the cost of repairing damage to Lebanese buildings, roads and infrastructure run into the billions of dollars.
Hezbollah fighters crossed from Lebanon into northern Israel on July 12, killing three Israeli soldiers and capturing two more. Israel responded with attacks that lasted until a UN-organized ceasefire took effect on Aug. 14.
"We did not think, even one per cent, that the capture would lead to a war at this time and of this magnitude," Nasrallah said.
While Nasrallah claimed victory over Israel when the ceasefire took hold, he apologized in the interview for the suffering of the Lebanese people.
Talks on prisoner swap
Nasrallah also said negotiations with Israel on a prisoner swap are in the early stages.
"Contacts recently began for negotiations," he said.
"The Italians seem to be getting close and are trying to get into the subject. The United Nations is interested," Nasrallah said. The speaker of the Lebanese parliament, Nabih Berri, is in charge of negotiations, he added.
Israel won't comment on a prisoner exchange, but officials have said that Israel has 13 Hezbollah prisoners, and dozens of bodies of guerrillas.
On Sunday, Vice-Premier Shimon Peres said there were no negotiations underway at the moment, but he suggested there could be talks once the Lebanese government is in control of the country's south.
Nasrallah, who has been in hiding since the first day of the war, said he believed the Israelis would try and kill him if they knew his whereabouts.
When the ceasefire took effect, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olhmert pledged to "continue pursuing [Hezbollah] everywhere at all times."
Nasrallah also said he did not think fighting would break out soon in Lebanon. "The current Israeli situation, and the available givens tell us that we are not heading to another round," he said.
French soldiers rebuild bridges
French soldiers in Lebanon are helping the Lebanese army rebuild bridges knocked down or damaged during the fighting. That's a necessary first step to being able to move supplies and people around southern Lebanon.
The 240 soldiers are not part of the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon, which will reinforce the Lebanese army as it tries to maintain the ceasefire.
The troops are expected to work on 15 bridges during at least six weeks they'll remain in Lebanon.
France is also contributing 2,000 soldiers to the 15,000 the UN wants in its peacekeeping force.

Israel finally implicitly admits illegal nuclear weapons program

The purchases come at a time when Iran is refusing to bow to growing Western demands to halt its nuclear program, and after Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has called for Israel to be "wiped off the map."
The new submarines, built at a cost of $1.3 billion with Germany footing one-third of the bill, have diesel-electric propulsion systems that allow them to remain submerged for longer periods of time than the three nuclear arms-capable submarines already in Israel's fleet, the Jerusalem Post reported.
The latest submarines not only would be able to carry out a first strike should Israel choose to do so, but they also would provide Israel with crucial second-strike capabilities, said Paul Beaver, a London-based independent defense analyst.
Israel is already believed to have that ability in the form of the Jericho-1 and Jericho-2 nuclear-capable ballistic missiles, which are buried so far underground they would survive a nuclear strike, he said.
"The Iranians would be very foolish if they attacked Israel," Beaver said.
German officials have said the contract for the new submarines was signed July 6, and the Jerusalem Post reported this week the subs will be operational shortly.
Israel, operating on a policy of nuclear ambiguity, has never confirmed or denied whether it has nuclear weapons. It is believed, however, to have the world's sixth-largest stockpile of atomic arms, including hundreds of warheads.

My question is - with all the recent Israeli aggression and almost full-scale invasion and war in the Middle East, why isn't IAEA inspecting or even talking about Israeli nuclear (and possibly biological and chemical weapon programs). Why is Israel allowed to continue secret nuclear weapons development programs without checks and balances? Why is even talking of it, just like jailed Israeli whistle blower Mordechai Vanunu, is a taboo, and presented as a crime. Israel, in my views, is as much of a threat to the stability and peace in the Middle East and the world as Iran; I would not be coerced to think otherwise, even though - this is not the consensus in the west. When will people start asking the real questions?

Israel might deal with Iran on its own

Israel is carefully watching the world's reaction to Iran's continued refusal to suspend uranium enrichment, with some high-level officials arguing it is now clear that when it comes to stopping Iran, Israel "may have to go it alone," The Jerusalem Post has learned.
One senior source said on Tuesday that Iran "flipped the world the bird" by not responding positively to the Western incentive plan to stop uranium enrichment. He expressed frustration that the Russians and Chinese were already saying that Iran's offer of a "new formula" and willingness to enter "serious negotiations" was an opening to keep on talking.
"The Iranians know the world will do nothing," he said. "This is similar to the world's attempts to appease Hitler in the 1930s - they are trying to feed the beast."
He said there was a need to understand that "when push comes to shove," Israel would have to be prepared to "slow down" the Iranian nuclear threat by itself.
Having said this, he did not rule out the possibility of US military action, but said that if this were to take place, it would probably not occur until the spring or summer of 2008, a few months before President George W. Bush leaves the international stage. The US presidential elections, which Bush cannot contest because of term limits, are in November 2008.
Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, in a meeting in Paris with French Foreign Minister Phillippe Douste-Blazy Wednesday, said Iran "poses a global threat" and needed to be dealt with by the whole international community.
"The first thing they need to do is stop the enrichment of uranium," Livni said. "Everyday that passes brings the Iranians closer to building a nuclear bomb. The world can't afford a nuclear Iran." She said the Iranian reply to the Western incentives was just an attempt to "gain time."
Government officials said Israel's role at this time is to warn the world of the dangers of an Iranian nuclear potential. Some government officials are sending the message to their counterparts abroad that the firm implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 on Lebanon will send a strong message to Iran - which is testing the world's resolve - that it is serious about implementing Security Council resolutions.
Meanwhile, the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) reported Wednesday that the Iranian news service Al-Borz, which it said is known to have access to sources in the Iranian government, predicted that President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad would announce what the news service called Iran's "nuclear birth" on the first anniversary of his government later this month. In addition, an article Tuesday on the Teheran Times Web site, considered to be affiliated with the Foreign Ministry, implied that Iran's nuclear technology had already reached the point of no return. "If the West is seeking to impede Iran's nuclear industry, it should realize that Iran has passed this stage," the report read.
Diplomats from Europe, the US, Russia and China were poring over details of Iran's counterproposal to the Western nuclear incentives package Wednesday. Initial comments from Russia and China made clear Washington is likely to face difficulty getting at least those nations to agree to any tough sanctions against Iran.
In Paris, however, Douste-Blazy made clear that his government was sticking by the UN demand for Iran to halt enrichment by the end of this month as a precondition to further talks. Israeli officials said France has consistently advocated a firm position with Iran regarding the nuclear issue.

Israel violates Middle East ceasefire

The fragile Middle East ceasefire faced its biggest test yet Saturday when Israeli forces raided a Hezbollah stronghold in eastern Lebanon - violating the five-day-old agreement.
One Israeli soldier was killed and two others were injured, one seriously, when a commando team tried to stop what Israel claims is the smuggling of weapons to Hezbollah from Syria and Iran. Both countries deny arming the militant group.
Hezbollah fighters say they successfully fought off the Israeli fighters near the Syrian border and foiled their raid, although Israel contends the commando team was able to carry out its mission.
According to witnesses near the village of Boudai, west of Baalbek, Israeli missiles destroyed a bridge during the raid.
Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Saniora called the military mission a "flagrant violation" of the United Nations-brokered ceasefire, which came into effect Monday after more than a month of vicious fighting between Israel and the Hezbollah. Hundreds of Lebanese civilians were killed and nearly a million displaced from their homes.
The Israeli army claims it will continue such missions until "an effective monitoring unit" of Lebanese or multinational troops is in place.
"If the Syrians and Iran continue to arm Hezbollah in violation of the (UN ceasefire) resolution, Israel is entitled to act to defend the principle of the arms embargo," Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Mark Regev said.
Meanwhile, an international force is being put together in Lebanon - it'll be deployed near the Lebanon-Israel border to provide a buffer between Hezbollah militants and Israel.
About 50 peacekeepers from France arrived in the south of Lebanon Saturday. France has pledged only 200 army engineers to the disappointment of the UN and United States - which had hoped for a larger commitment from the nation. The UN is calling on more countries to provide peacekeepers, which work with existing Lebanon forces.
The UN wants to have 3,500 troops in southern Lebanon by September 2, and the entire force in place by November 4. The Security Council has authorized up to 13,000 troops in addition to the 2,000-member force already there.

A former judge convicted of exposing himself while presiding over jury trials by using a sexual device under his robe was sentenced Friday to four years in prison.
Donald Thompson had spent almost 23 years on the bench and had served as a state legislator before retiring from the court in 2004. He showed no reaction when he was sentenced.
At his trial this summer, his former court reporter, Lisa Foster, testified that she saw Thompson expose himself at least 15 times during trial between 2001 and 2003. Prosecutors said he also used a device known as a penis pump during at least four trials in the same period.
Thompson, 59, was convicted last month of four felony courts of indecent exposure for incidents that took place in his Creek County courtroom.
Thompson, a married father of three grown children, testified that the penis pump was given to him as a joke by a longtime hunting and fishing buddy.
"It wasn't something I was hiding," he said.
He said he may have absentmindedly squeezed the pump's handle during court cases but never used it to masturbate.
Foster told authorities that she saw Thompson use the device almost daily during the August 2003 murder trial of a man accused of shaking a toddler to death. A whooshing sound could be heard on Foster's audiotape of the trial. When jurors asked the judge about the sound, Thompson said he hadn't heard it but would listen for it.
Police built a case against the judge after a police officer testifying in a 2003 murder trial saw a piece of plastic tubing disappear under Thompson's robe. During a lunch break, officers took photographs of the pump under the desk.
Investigators later checked the carpet, Thompson's robes and the chair behind the bench and found semen, according to court records.
Carmelia Brossett, a senior probation officer for the state Department of Corrections, said in a presentencing report that Thompson refused to undergo psychosexual testing.
"Thompson's denial of the offense would likely present difficulty, if not inability for treatment providers to provide meaningful and beneficial sex-offender treatment," she said.
The jury recommended a sentence of one year in prison and a $10,000 fine on each count. The jury foreman has said it was the jury's intent that Thompson serve the full sentence.
Judge C. Allen McCall denied a defense motion asking that Thompson be allowed to remain free pending an appeal. Thompson was also ordered to pay a $40,000 fine.

Another Islamo-fascist tries to highjack a plane

A female passenger aboard United Flight 923 had Vaseline, a screw driver, matches and a note referencing Al Qaeda, according to Phil Orlandella, spokesman for Boston's Logan International Airport. The flight, with 182 passengers and 12 crew members landed safely, United spokesman Brandon Borrman said. Borrman said a female passenger was spotted engaging in some "suspicious" activity, but he could not immediately say what the activity was. The flight was escorted to Boston by two fighter jets. "If she pulled these out of her carry-on luggage, that would have made many people very concerned," said terrorism expert Neil Livingstone. "She shouldn't have had these items on the aircraft." Officials from the Massachusetts Port Authority told the local FOX affiliate that there were three suspicious passengers aboard the flight and that at some point, there was a confrontation with the flight's crew members. Officials said the three passengers may have had "items" on them but there was no description given of those items.
That comes only a week after a huge Muslim terrorist plot disruption to attack up to 10 British airpliners, and blow them up in the mid-air using liquid explosives - just unbelievable.

That's right, as the ceasefire that is scheduled for Monday is overshadowed by continuous rocket barrages by Hezbollah and air strikes by Israel - there is another important battlefield in this conflict - and it is public opinion. As news outlets follow their programming models - bloggers and free lance journalists do not. For those interested - check out popular web encyclopedia Wikipedia's article discussion on this conflict - it had already been locked for moderation because of article vandalism, as people are literally fighting for every word and definition of the description of this month-long and bloody conflict. Those who control the populous opinion, control the populous - this simple wisdom seem to be very prudent in today's world of uncertainty, terrorism, and dangers.
Another interesting example of this is Yahoo message boards - all one has to do, is click on Yahoo news article concerning this conflict, scroll down, and hit "discuss" button. Some people there, usually just looking for attention (web term trolling), would post obscene and racist things, however, most posts there bring up the issue of unbalanced and skewed reporting on conflict, and the way people feel about the latter and the conflict itself. The Internets, in the words of president Bush, is the place for pluralism and debate, and despite the fact it can get ugly and uncomfortable to some - it is in the debate where the truth is born.

In a surprising move Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert endorsed an emerging Mideast cease-fire deal late Friday, after a day of dramatic day brinksmanship including a threat to expand the ground war in Lebanon. The agreement calls for the deployment of 30,000 Lebanese and U.N. troops along the Israel-Lebanon border.

Another Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan

It's happened again.
The latest in a recent string of fatalities involving Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan happened Friday, when a suicide bomber attacked a NATO convoy in southern Afghanistan near the Pakistan border.
The incident took place in southern Afghanistan, where a rash of insurgent violence has emerged in recent weeks.
There were two other soldiers in the G-Wagon at the time of the explosion, all headed back to Kandahar City. Witnesses say the initial blast was followed by a massive fire, but neither of the other soldiers was injured.
As for the deceased soldier, his name's being withheld temporarily at the request of his family.
A purported Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousaf Ahmadi, claimed responsibility for the attack and said the bomber was an Afghan named Mohammad Ilyas, who also died in the attack. Three Afghan civilians were also injured.
With the latest fatality, seven Canadian soldiers have been killed in the past week, bringing the death toll to 26 soldiers since Canada entered the country in 2002.
Recent weeks have also seen some of the bloodiest fighting since the Taliban were ousted by a U.S.-led coalition within months of the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.
Canada has about 2,200 troops in Afghanistan, most of them based in Kandahar.

Mossad operative accused of spying on US Navy

Jerusalem Post reports US Navy sailor, Ariel J. Weinmann, is suspected of spying for Israel and has been held in prison for four months, according to an article published Monday in the Saudi daily Al-Watan. It reported that Weinmann is being held at a military base in Virginia on suspicion of espionage and desertion.
According to the navy, Weinmann was apprehended on March 26 "after it was learned that he had been listed as a deserter by his command." Though initial information released by the navy makes no mention of it, Al-Watan reported that he was returning from an undisclosed "foreign country." American sources close to the Defense Department told Al-Watan that Israel was the country in question.

Middle East Crisis: Day 27, Israel murders 40 civilians

In retaliation for 15 dead Israeli civilians and 12 Israeli army reservists at the hands of Hizballah -an Israeli air raid killed more than 40 civilians in a Lebanese village on Monday, Lebanon's prime minister said, and other air strikes killed 19 after diplomatic efforts to end the 27-day-old war stalled.
"An hour ago, a horrific massacre took place in Houla village as a result of the intentional Israeli bombardment that resulted in more than 40 martyrs," Prime Minister Fouad Siniora told an emergency Arab foreign ministers meeting in Beirut.
Residents of Houla said they feared up to 60 people, including many children, had been killed. They said most of the people were shepherds who had refused to flee the fighting.
Nineteen people were killed in separate strikes on other villages in the south and the eastern Bekaa valley.
Speaking before news of the Houla raid, Lebanese Health Minister Mohammad Khalifeh said the war had killed 925 people, mostly civilians, with 75 missing, presumed dead.
About one-third of the dead were children under the age of 13, he told Reuters. Ninety-four Israelis have also been killed.
